Situated on the banks of the River Thames every Saturday a sea of sharply dressed and stylish people can be seen queuing outside Club Colosseum in Vauxhall, London for the UK’s biggest and longest running urban gay night Bootylicious. On Saturday 18th July I was invited there to celebrate their 8th birthday.
Having not been in Club Colosseum since early 2000 I was pleasantly reminded that this is a fabulous club with one of the best sound and lighting systems in London. No wonder, I loved raving here back in the day.
I digress, back to Bootylicious, the main room was jam packed with people dancing, shouting over and taking in the rnb, dancehall and funky beats provided by DJs Jeffrey Hinto, Biggy C, Tyron and Sugarbear. There was even a performance by funky crew FR3E who performed their smash hit Tribal Skank with participation from members of the crowd. They performed the track twice and I still don’t know the dance but I was extremely impressed by the ladies on stage that did.
This was my first ever experience at a gay night and as a heterosexual female I wondered if I would feel out of place. That didn’t happen at all! Like any other club night everybody was there to hear good music, have fun, drink and maybe meet a future lover or at least have some eye-candy for the night.
My girls and I had a lot of fun and with its 5.30am finishing time, my feet were killing and I was completely shattered once I got home, but it was definitely a club night I would go to again.
