The Top Boy star steps behind the camera for a brutal juvenile detention drama hitting UK cinemas on 30 October 2026.
Ashley Walters is trading the streets of Summerhouse for the unforgiving corridors of a juvenile detention centre. The actor, best known for his role in Top Boy, is making his directorial feature debut with Animol, a raw, unflinching drama set behind the walls of a youth prison. Sky has just confirmed it will open in UK cinemas on 30 October 2026.
Inside the Walls
At the centre of the film is Troy, played by rising star Tut Nyuot (The Long Walk, Steve), a teenager thrown into a brutal world of gangs, loyalty, and violence from the moment he steps through the doors. Paired with a volatile cellmate and forced to navigate daily threats and power struggles, Troy finds an unexpected connection with a fellow inmate — but in an environment this oppressive, vulnerability can be lethal.
Nyuot shares the screen with Vladyslav Baliuk as two young offenders caught in the prison’s harsh ecosystem. Supporting them are Stephen Graham (Help, Boiling Point) as a Welfare Officer attempting to guide the young men through their sentences, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune: Part One, Enola Holmes 2) as Troy’s mother.
A Film Born from Collaboration
Written by Nick Love (The Football Factory, A Town Called Malice) and produced by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor (Blue Story, Boxing Day) and Tom Hawkins (True History of the Kelly Gang), Animol was developed by Film4 in collaboration with Sky and the BFI. The combination of Walters’ directorial vision and Love’s sharp, street-level writing promises something that doesn’t flinch.
