The world’s biggest Afrobeats festival returned to Portimão’s golden sands, uniting fans from 180 countries for a weekend of culture, music and unforgettable moments.
The sixth edition of Afro Nation Portugal just wrapped on the golden sands of Praia da Rocha, and it was everything the world’s biggest Afrobeats festival has become: a cultural homecoming, a three-day party, and proof that no other event on the calendar unites the global diaspora quite like this. Fans flew in from 180 countries, women made up 60% of the crowd, and the energy didn’t dip once across the weekend.
The LIT Stage brought the weekend’s biggest moments. Burna Boy celebrated his 35th birthday in front of tens of thousands, the entire beach singing along in what’s become an Afro Nation tradition. Tyla delivered her first main stage headline set, debuting her new single ‘IS IT LOVE’ and giving fans a taste of what’s to come with her forthcoming album A*Pop. Wizkid reminded everyone why he’s one of Afrobeats’ greatest ambassadors, closing Sunday night with a set that felt definitive.
Elsewhere, Asake, Olamide and Theodora kept the energy soaring, while Brazilian star Ludmilla made her Afro Nation debut, connecting Portugal’s Lusophone community with Brazil and the wider African diaspora. US acts Gunna, Kehlani and Mariah The Scientist brought hip hop and R&B into the mix, and French rapper Niska had the entire beach rapping back in French—a reminder that this festival speaks every language.
South Gidi and the Piano People Stage
After Wizkid’s Sunday headline slot, DJ Tunez and DJ Maphorisa brought the South Gidi Experience to life for the first time—a collaborative project with Wizkid and Mavo that fused West and South African sounds. It was billed as the festival’s first ever official main stage afterparty, and thousands stayed on the beach to witness it.
Over on the Piano People stage, South African dance music took centre stage every day. Uncle Waffles, Focalistic, Kelvin Momo, Madumane and more turned the stage into the global home of Amapiano outside South Africa. It’s more than a stage—it’s a cultural anchor, and it buzzed from afternoon until late into the night.
Beyond the Beach
Afro Nation stretched far beyond the main stages. Afrotronic beach parties at NoSoloÁgua were packed daily, boat parties sold out, and new for 2026, exclusive hotel takeovers gave guests access to luxury pool parties and intimate meet-and-greets with festival artists. The expanded YAM Food Court brought flavours from across Africa and the Caribbean, with Jollof Mama, Abarka, Patty Planet’s viral PAZZA creations, Tinie Tempah’s Raps, and Lisbon favourites Rhythm & Roots feeding the masses.
Flag Friday returned as one of the festival’s most powerful traditions, with thousands waving the flags of their nations in a vibrant display of heritage and unity. It’s the image that defines Afro Nation: people from every corner of the world, standing together.
