With the release of  Me And Earl And The Dying Girl which follows Greg’s friendship with the terminally ill Olivia, out on the 4th September we felt that would be no time like the present to take a look at some of our best buds in film throughout time.

Woody and Buzz

This pair had a bit of a rocky start as the boys battled over their love and attention from Andy to be his ‘favourite toy’. A few harsh truths were exchanged between the pair; in particularly from Woody as he found Buzz’s genuine belief that he was a space ranger hero absolutely infuriating. Nevertheless, when Woody is blamed for Buzz’s fall out of Andy’s window, he embarks on a mission to find Buzz and bring him back. The pair go on quite the adventure trying to get back and needless to say, become great friends as a consequence.

Ferris Buellers Day Off

Such a classic film and interesting combination of best friends. Ferris is a naughty chappy that everybody loves; he gets away with murder using his charm. Himself and his best friend, Cameron, are worlds apart. Cameron is a nervous, depressive character that we see has a few episodes throughout the film. Yet despite how hugely different their personalities are, the two are inseparable. It is almost as though Cameron’s depressive personality spurs Ferris on to make the absolute best of every situation in life and to live it to the full, and bring his best friend along with him to show him how good it all really is.

Clueless

Here we have our classic fabulous and sassy girls Cher and Dionne. Both rich, beautiful, popular and the best of friends, all is going well for them. When new girl Tai comes on the scene who has no clue about fashion, boys and anything important in the eyes of Cher and Dionne they decide to take them under her wing. Their friendship is put under the test when Tai’s popularity soars and she then fancies the same guy as Cher. Uh-oh, girl drama. But like true gal pals, these honeys don’t let this get in between them and in classic girl style. a week later they both apologise profusely and go back to being best friends. Good work ladies.

Harry & Ron

Not much beats the cuteness of these two when they first meet on the train as little squirts on their way to Hogwarts, from that moment on the two are absolutely inseparable. Throughout the films they have their little hiccups and fallouts, as friends do, but both of them, quite literally, fight for each other through everything. These two definitely take the best friend award.

Superbad

Seth and Evan are completely inseparable-and hilarious- as they try and live their last few weeks at high school to the full. Granted, it doesn’t quite go to plan for them as they get thrown out of clubs, get in trouble trying to buy alcohol underage, and epically fail, several times, trying to score their dream girls. Through it all, these two definitely learn how close they are and how much they will miss each other when they go their separate ways at university.

Juno

These two definitely take their friendship down a slightly different route to the others.. Bleeker and Juno having been best friends for years, spending all their time together, realise that they are in fact in love with each other.  An emotion that a lot of people may have one point or another felt if their best friends happen to be of the opposite sex. These two find their best friend to be their soul mate too- awhhh.

My Girl

Vada and Thomas definitely win as the cutest set of best friends. Firstly, they are only 11, which makes their friendship even cuter, as they talk about whether they have ever kissed anyone and have their first kiss together. Whilst everyone else seems to be disinterested in Vada’s quirky personality, Thomas sticks by her side. However, when something tragic happens to Thomas, this pair of best friends absolutely breaks your heart.

Bend it like Beckham

Jesminder and Juliette becoming best friends through their love for football, something that is completely frowned upon by Jesminder’s family and religion. Despite their different cultural and religious backgrounds, and a slight fall out over a certain boy, these two become extremely close throughout the film.

Stand by Me

These four boys all come from a fairly turbulent background, each with their own individual personal problems. Fed up of their problems at home the group head out to try and become the local heroes by finding the body of a boy from the town who went missing. This coming of age drama shows the boys on their adventure and though they are only young we see them dealing and helping each other with their insecurities and issues.

The Girl Next Door

Probably not one you would originally think of for a best friend in film list, and definitely not a conventional one. Matthew, Eli and Clitz are best friends throughout high school and they aren’t the most popular of kids, they stick together, work hard and are essentially just waiting for school to be over. Until Danielle moves in next-door and the three take a rather interesting journey together, involving some rather R-rated, saucy, scenes, the three finish high school together in absolute style.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Greg and Earl have been best friends since childhood. But you’d never hear Greg using the term ‘friend’. He prefers to describe Greg as his ‘co-worker’ as the clip above demonstrates. But it’s when Greg meets Rachel (the Dying Girl of the film) that he learns a few lessons about life and friendship.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is in cinemas this Friday 4th September.
