The biggest names in hip hop turned out in force on the green carpet for the eighth annual BET Hip Hop Awards to shine a light on the community and salute the best in hip hop culture.

Hosted by Snoop Dogg, respectfully known amongst his peers and celebrity friends as “Uncle Snoop,” this 90-minute award show pays homage to a culture that changed the world while highlighting the year’s best in hip hop music.

Celebrating both the biggest names in the game and newcomers on the scene, this year’s highlights included a medley from the self-proclaimed ‘King of New York,’ Kendrick Lamar performing hit singles “B—h Don’t Kill My Vibe”, “Swimming Pools (Drank)” and, “Poetic Justice,” while Snoop took to the stage with Diddy, Rick Ross & French Montana.

The highest honour went to 80’s female rap pioneer MC Lyte, who received the prestigious lifetime achievement, “I Am Hip Hop Award.” Grammy-nominated and legendary lyricist, Lyte, was also surprised with a special video tribute featuring Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Queen Latifah.

The highly anticipated cyphers also return as part of this year’s show with the hottest MC’s delivering 16 explosive bars that everyone will be talking about for the rest of the year. With a number of sneak peeks being leaked online and sending twitter into a frenzy, these freestyle battles are an absolute must-see! Without a doubt, this is hip hop at its freshest!
