Homer’s ancient tale gets the full Nolan treatment with brand-new IMAX technology and an A-list ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Zendaya, and Tom Holland.
Christopher Nolan is taking Homer’s The Odyssey to places the ancient poet never imagined. The director’s next epic has just dropped a new featurette titled “A Fantastic Voyage” and it offers a tantalising glimpse into what happens when one of cinema’s most ambitious auteurs tackles foundational mythology with cutting-edge IMAX film technology.
This isn’t just another sword-and-sandal adaptation. Nolan shot the entire film using brand-new IMAX cameras, marking the first time Homer’s 2,800-year-old saga will unfold on IMAX screens. The scale alone is mouth-watering: a mythic action epic filmed across multiple continents, produced by Nolan and his longtime collaborator Emma Thomas through their Syncopy banner, with Thomas Hayslip executive producing.
A cast built for legend
The ensemble reads like a masterclass in contemporary star power. Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, joined by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o. Zendaya and Charlize Theron round out the marquee names, each presumably embodying gods, mortals, and the monstrous figures that populate the hero’s ten-year journey home from Troy.
Nolan’s trademark narrative complexity and visual grandeur feel tailor-made for The Odyssey‘s structure—a story that’s always been as much about time, memory, and perception as it is about shipwrecks and sirens. Expect the kind of immersive, large-format spectacle that made Dunkirk and Interstellar theatrical events, not just films.
When and where to see it
The Odyssey lands in UK and Ireland cinemas on 17 July 2026. If you want to see Nolan’s vision the way it was meant to be experienced, IMAX is the only answer. Check out the new featurette now and start marking your calendar, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the decade.
