Over 70 historic vessels including Dunkirk Little Ships and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee barge transform London’s only marina into a maritime celebration on 12th and 13th September.
St Katharine Docks is about to become one of the most quietly stunning destinations in London this September. The 17th Classic Boat Festival takes over the marina on 12th and 13th September, and this year it’s the biggest gathering the docks have ever hosted—over 70 registered vessels, each with a story worth telling. Think Dunkirk Little Ships, WW2 classics, wooden sailing barges, and meticulously restored narrowboats dating back to the 1930s. And yes, the Gloriana herself—the late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee barge—will be moored right there in all her ceremonial splendour.
Showstoppers and Serious Stories
The lineup reads like a maritime who’s who. Tom Cunliffe, the beloved yachting writer and talk host, returns to hold court on Sunday at 1pm. One of the festival’s stars is the beautifully restored RNLI and Dunkirk Little Ship Guide of Dunkirk, painstakingly brought back to life by award-winning boat builder Abbey Molyneux. There’s also the newly restored barge Raybel, Sir Alec Rose’s historic yacht Lively Lady, Arthur Ransome’s favourite Nancy Blackett, and a Clipper Round the World Yacht, Courageous. A pair of classic 1930s narrowboats make their first festival appearance, charming inside and out.
Beyond the headliners, there’s the festival backbone: a record-breaking 24 Dunkirk Little Ships, the Thames Sailing Barge Gladys, the mighty Motor Tug Kent, plus the Wapping Marine Police Unit, Royal Navy, and wooden boat builder Landamores joining the party. Opening and closing to a salute of horns, the whole estate transforms—flags adorning ships, waterside buzzing with energy, restaurants across the marina serving maritime specials. It’s not just a boat show; it’s the docks reimagined, a reminder of why maritime heritage still matters.
