Do or don’t: double denim

Double denim is in something of a fashion limbo at the moment. While stile icons like Rihanna, Gwen Stefani and Cameron Diaz regularly rock the trend, there are many celebs that fall short of the mark — think Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake circa 2001.

Follow our style tips below to avoid committing a serious fashion faux pas this winter.

DO ease yourself in

The thought of stepping out the house in this controversial trend is enough to send some nervous fashionistas running for the hills! If you’re new to the trend, you can ease yourself in by working with coloured denim. For example, pair your white jeans with a blue denim jacket or dark skinnies with a bleached shirt.

DO choose quality denim

We’ve all done it: purchased a pair of bargain jeans only to wear them once and find them saggy and misshapen. Spending a little more on your denim will help you avoid this, creating a more polished look.

Designer stores like Trilogy have an excellent range of J Brand jeans. Offering both quality and style, they’re the perfect basis for your double denim look.

DON’T overload on denim

We’re in the midst of a 90s revival at the moment, but that doesn’t mean that denim handbags, shoes and hairbands are acceptable. Let the skirts, jackets, jeans and shirts do the talking — and leave those dodgy accessories in the past!

DON’T wear the same shade

As Justin Timberlake learnt all too harshly, there’s no place in the fashion world for denim suits. Choose two denim items that are the same shade and you run the risk of making this mistake.

Instead, choose different washes and colour denim. The differences may just be subtle, but make sure they are there.
