How do you find a good movie? Without seeing the film itself, there’s very little to go on. Sure, you can read reviews but these are varied and what achieves one person’s approval may get another’s scorn. When it comes down to it, your personal taste is all that matters. So the only way you’ll truly know is if you see something for yourself.

So what makes a good trailer? If you haven’t seen the latest Internship trailer, you’re missing a great example. The trailer highlights everything the film has to offer, doesn’t spoil anything or ruin the film itself, and isn’t making any ridiculous promises it can’t keep.

 

Quick Exposition

Case in point is the fact that the trailer is highly informative without getting lost in the details. All you need to know is that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play Billy and Nick former salesmen who, in need of a modern career, try to get an internship at Google. All this is told within seconds in what is commonly known as “in medias res”, or “starting in the middle of things”. After all, why bother getting lost in introductions and exposition if all the jokes and potential are in the middle?

It’s modern storytelling that works for a reason. As the rest of the trailer shows, the premise is a perfect set-up for humour and comedy in all forms and varieties. The trailer may show a few jokes here and there but if you’ve seen any previous films starring the Vaughn Owen Duo (such as last year’s The Watch, also directed by Shawn Levy) you know the film will pack more than a few punchlines and laughs.

In other words, this is a comedy team that offers you your money’s worth. When The Internship opens later this year, there should be more than enough to satisfy anyone. In the mean time, the juicy, hilarious trailer should suffice to whet your appetite.
