Copycat (girlfriend) marks the return for Australian songstress Melissa James, who had a hit single and top 20 in the ARIA dance charts in the 1990s with the track ‘Baby Come Back’.

Released independently in early May, ‘Copycat (Girlfriend) is a strong pop-rock track that channels Australian rock greats such as the Baby Animals and The Divinyls, while seamlessly including strong pop and dance themes into the mix. Melissa wrote and produced the track herself, after committing to write music on a weekly basis with her musical partner Shane Ryall, a practise that has produced excellent results.

Melissa draws influences from the pop and rock greats such as Pink, The Foo Fighters and Aussie rock Queen Chrissie Amphlett and although normally shy, she becomes a strutting, pouting entertainer when onstage. With the voice of a pop diva, Melissa James has written a joyous and radio friendly pop tune with her track ‘Copycat (Girlfriend)’ that combines lavish vocals with stripped back rock guitar.

No stranger to live performances, Melissa has teamed up with an impressive lineup of reputable Melbourne musicians to create her band, and launched the single on Thursday the 12th at iconic St Kilda venue, The Vineyard.
