Lingerie brands are supporting bizarre ‘lingerie football league’ in quest for gender equality

Over 60 international labels including Panache and DKNY have jumped on the equality bandwagon for a Lingerie Football League who, yes you guessed it, play football in their underwear.

The team is made up of 14 women whose aim is to generate media coverage and public interest in women’s football. Wouldn’t that be something?

Luckily for them, sexualized women have been trending for quite some time, what with boobs and bums plastered all over the tube to comfort us on our way home from work and the generous newspapers that remind us of just how special we are to them. That is, just how special our half-naked bodies are.

You know what else would be something; if women didn’t actually have to strip down to their goddamn underwear to get people interested in what they are actually doing.

It says a lot about the type of culture we live in where brands think that it’s actually empowering for women to be sexualized absolutely everywhere humanly possible.

Make no mistake, this is not about gender equality, this is about the media sticking to what it sticks to best: using women as sexual objects to generate capital. It works like a charm because the more insecure we get, the more things will we buy to feel better about ourselves.

So no, I don’t think we need a lingerie football league. What we need is a society that can appreciate women for their talents and abilities without needing yet another pathetic excuse to do just that.
