In 1980 after Zimbabwe finally gained their independence, as a supporter, Marley felt that he should be a central part of the celebration. He personally financed the celebration arrangements costing him over US$90,000. Bob Marley used his music in order to get directly involved with the Zimbabwe Liberation Movement. His song Zimbabwe spoke of personal rights, judgement, and getting through the struggle together.
