Newt (Matthew McConaughey) confronts Lt. Barbour at Mary's house

Academy Award winner, Matthew McConaughey, is flexing his acting muscle of late. Judging from the official trailer for Free State of Jones he is about to give another top notch performance.

Free State of Jones is based on the true story of a defiant farmer, Newt Knight, played by McConaughey, during the American Civil War and his fight against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi. Joining McConaughey is the women who just seems to be everywhere at the moment Gugu Mbatha-Raw who starred in the leading role for Belle.

Official synopsis reads;

Newt Knight (Academy Award®-winner Matthew McConaughey), and his extraordinary rebellion against the Confederate States Army. Bringing together an unlikely band of poor white farmers and runaway slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.

Directed by The Hunger Games and Pleasentville director Gary Ross the film also stars Keri Russell (Mission Impossible III, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 & 2).

Free State of Jones is released in UK cinemas on September 30th 2016.
