Each week, as Flavourmag’s resident Film Editor, I bring you my weekly roundup of new movies out in cinema. We have some real tough contenders for our pick of the week even if there isn’t much to choose from the quality is still exceptionally high. What will you choose?

THE MARTIAN

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission.

Ridley Scott seems to be back to his best with The Martian, its intelligent and thrilling aided with an air of comedy too. An enticing script and great acting makes this well-crafted film very much a crowd pleaser.

THE INTERN

Starting a new job can be a difficult challenge, especially if you’re already retired. Looking to get back into the game, 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) seizes the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site. Ben soon becomes popular with his younger co-workers, including Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway), the boss and founder of the company. Whittaker’s charm, wisdom and sense of humour help him develop a special bond and growing friendship with Jules.

The Intern is extremely heartfelt, touching and full of integrity which will have you grabbing at the tissues one moment but the humour and especially De Niro’s performance of delivery in his comedic lines and even more so his facial expressions will have you feeling all warm deep down.

Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literatures most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

Visually, beautifully stunning to watch, powerfully acted Macbeth may be hard to understand at times but this tragic thriller is set to become one of the best cinematic pieces of our generation.
