New Releases in Cinema’s this week 30th August 2013

This week’s film actually, for once, gives us quite a bit of variety and maybe a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy. We have a feel good, coming of age film. What I would call a concert film for teenage girls, a dark, violence fest and a ridiculous comedy.

The Way Way Back

The Way Way Back is yet another coming of age story of a 14 year old boy, Duncan (Liam James). While on his summer holiday’s with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), his mother’s annoying and overbearing boyfriend Trent (Carell) and his daughter Steph (Zoe Levin), he finds an unexpected friend in the form of the carefree manager of Water Wizz water park, Owen (Rockwell). Duncan finds it hard to fit in but through this unlikely friendship with Owen he begins to open up to finally find his place in the world.

This is a typical role reversal film with the adults acting liking teenagers and this one kid the grown up. With a cast of some pretty big names including the very understated Sam Rockwell, The Way Way back promises to bring quite a few big laughs, make you feel uplifted and for once root for the hard done by kid. A classic feel good film.

Hammer of the Gods

Set in Viking Britain, A young Viking Warrior, Steiner (Charlie Bewley), is sent by his father, the King, on a quest to find his estranged brother who was banished from the Kingdom many years previous. Accompanied by his many friends and trusted allies, Steiner travels across the dark and hostile land gradually seeing him emerge as the man his father wants him to be – a ruthless and unforgiving successor to his throne.

From the makers of Bronson and The Sweeney and set in a time were only violence was the language people listened to, Hammer of the Gods is certainly not for the faint hearted. With gripping violence and drama laced throughout the film this will only appeal to certain type of audience. Have you got a stomach strong enough to take this amount of violence?

Pain and Gain

Based on the unbelievable true story of a group of personal trainers in 90’s Miami, Pain and Gain see’s 3 body builders, Daniel (Wahlberg), Paul (Dwayne Johnson) and Adrian (Anthony Mackie) team up to carrying out a kidnapping of a millionaire and see’s the scheme go quite majorly wrong.

From director Michael Bay (Transformers, Bad Boys), Pain and Gain is a “comedy” action drama based on a true story of 3 men who are actually on death row at the moment. So turning this story into a comedy just reeks of bad form, however if the trailer is anything to go by you could find yourselves rolling round the aisles with laughter.

MY PICK OF THE WEEK: THE WAY WAY BACK (But let it be known that’s a biased opinion as I am a big fan of Sam Rockwell).
