Every autumn I start a quest for the perfect pair of boots to take me through the winter months.

When you find the right pair, you just know you’re going to be wearing them everywhere – at work, on weekend shopping trips and on nights out. What’s more is that they go with just about everything, from skirts and thick tights to jeans and chunky knitwear.

So how do you know when you have found the right boots for you? The vast array of different styles on offer this season means that the decision of which pair to go for is going to be particularly tricky. Luckily, we’ve put together this ultimate guide to the different styles available.

Riding boots
Knee-high riding boots are the kind of style that Kate Middleton always rocks so effortlessly. Usually available in either brown or black leather, the boots will work well with skinny jeans, leggings, or with a jumper dress and thick tights. You just know they’re going to be a comfy favourite that you can wear all winter long.

There are so many variations of ankle boot available this year. These ankle boots from Tu are a fresh take on the simple black option, with an on trend tortoiseshell heel. The boots will look good with jeans but will also be an interesting addition to a little black dress and tights combo.

Wedge boots
If you struggle to find comfortable heels that you can walk in but still want the extra bit of height, wedge-heeled boots are definitely worth a look. Opt for a pair with a faux fur trim to keep your feet toasty warm all winter long, making them the ideal choice for adding some glamour to casual winter outfits.

When the weather gets really freezing, you’ll be delighted to own a pair of boots that feel like you’re slipping you’re feet into a pair of cosy slippers. Suede borg boots won’t let any cold air in and are sure to become your go-to shoes for crisp winter days when you need a bit of extra encouragement to leave the house.

Red boots
You don’t need to stick to just black and brown for footwear, so why not channel your inner Supergirl with a pair of red boots? Go for a rich cherry colour this A/W to elevate even the most simple of outfits to the next style level.

Evening wear calls for ankle boots with eye-catching details, like these black glitter boots. They’d be ideal for a Christmas party or any event where you’re keen to add a subtle hint of glamour.

Stiletto boots
The additional support offered by a boot comes in particularly handy during the colder months when the ground is more likely to be slippery and rough. A good choice for date nights or drinks out with the girls, boots with a stiletto heel are a brilliant combination of style and substance.
