Whalefall: First Trailer for Sperm Whale Survival Thriller Starring Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin

20th Century Studios unleashes a tense teaser for Brian Duffield’s survival drama about a son, a whale, and one hour of oxygen.

20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment have dropped the first teaser for Whalefall, and it’s one of the more singular high-concept thrillers we’ve seen in a while. The film follows Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams), who dives off the California coast searching for his late father’s remains—only to be swallowed whole by a massive sperm whale. Trapped inside with just an hour of oxygen, he’s forced to recall the tough lessons his dad (Josh Brolin) once taught him if he has any hope of survival.

Inside the Belly of the Beast

Director Brian Duffield—who co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, adapting Kraus’s novel—has built a career on genre-blending ingenuity, and Whalefall looks like his most ambitious swing yet. The premise is pure pulp poetry: grief, reconciliation, and claustrophobia colliding inside the digestive tract of a leviathan. It’s Jonah-meets-survival-thriller, with a father-son emotional core anchoring the absurdity.

Cast and Release

Alongside Abrams and Brolin, the ensemble includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Brian Grazer produces alongside Duffield and Jeb Brody. The teaser premiered with a 4DX preview event at Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria, hosted by Abrams and Duffield—because why not simulate whale guts in motion seats?

Whalefall opens exclusively in cinemas October 16. If you’ve been hungry for something stranger than your standard blockbuster fare, this one’s worth watching.
