Fourteen years after The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin revisits Facebook’s dark side with a whistleblower thriller starring Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White.
Aaron Sorkin is going back to Facebook. More than a decade after The Social Network made Zuckerberg a household name and won Sorkin an Oscar, the writer-director is returning to the social media giant for The Social Reckoning, a companion piece rooted in the scandals that broke wide open in the 2020s. The film hits UK cinemas on 9 October, and the first teaser trailer — tense, Sorkin-sharp, morally murky — has just landed.
This time, the focus shifts from Silicon Valley founders to the people who tried to hold them accountable. The Social Reckoning is based on the events behind The Facebook Files, the Wall Street Journal’s explosive exposé that shook the platform in 2021. At its centre is Frances Haugen, the Facebook engineer-turned-whistleblower who leaked thousands of internal documents. Mikey Madison — fresh off critical acclaim for Anora — plays Haugen, alongside Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who helped bring the story to light.
A Different Kind of Facebook Film
Where The Social Network was slick, fast, and glittering with ambition, the trailer for The Social Reckoning feels heavier — less origin myth, more moral reckoning. The supporting cast is stacked: Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong all feature in what looks like classic Sorkin territory: fast dialogue, institutional power, people in rooms making decisions that ripple outward.
Sorkin wrote and directed, with producers including Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. The film draws on real events — the story of a young engineer going up against one of the world’s most powerful companies is inherently cinematic, even before Sorkin gets his hands on it.
Where and When to Watch
