Portugal’s Algarve just got a new luxury hotel that pairs five-star hospitality with something genuinely different: a celebration of wine, literature, and local culture woven into every corner of the property.

A hotel built around Portuguese culture
Wine & Books by the Sea Algarve Resort opened its doors on 1 March 2026, welcoming its first guests to what is already one of the most distinctive hotel concepts in southern Portugal. The property sits within the protected natural reserve of Reserva Natural dos Salgados, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, about five miles from the resort town of Armação de Pêra.
The hotel is the latest opening from Portuguese hospitality group PBH, and follows the successful Wine & Books concept already established in Porto, Lisbon, and Sintra. The idea is simple but well-executed: showcase Portuguese culture through literature, gastronomy, and national wines. Iconic bookshelves are a signature feature throughout the property, alongside warm woods, traditionally crafted furniture, and interiors inspired by the surrounding landscape.
This is not a rebranded chain hotel trying to feel boutique. It is a considered identity that has been built across multiple properties, and the Algarve version arrives with €12 million invested in bringing the concept to life here.
What to expect from the resort
The resort has 250 rooms and suites across six categories, including pool-view rooms and spacious suites designed for families. It is a genuinely large property, but the nature-inspired design works to keep it feeling grounded rather than overwhelming.

Facilities include four outdoor pools, two indoor pools, a gym, spa, and a kids’ club. There are also dedicated event spaces on site, which positions this as a solid option for destination weddings and group trips, not just couples’ getaways.
The interior design was led by architect Joana Saraiva, and it shows a clear vision throughout. Soft sand-tone palettes, muted greens that echo the palm trees and lagoon outside, and a warm atmosphere that does not lean into the sterile luxury look common to many five-star properties.
Five restaurants worth booking
Dining is treated as part of the cultural experience, not an afterthought. The resort has five restaurant concepts running across Mediterranean, Asian, Italian, and Portuguese cuisine. The standout is Balcão da Tasca da Memória, which revives classic Portuguese recipes and reinterprets them with a contemporary touch. It is the kind of eating that feels specific to a place rather than designed for international guests who want something safe.
Chef André Basto oversees the gastronomy direction across PBH’s properties, including the Tasca da Memória concept in Lisbon and Porto. The Algarve version brings that culinary identity to the south coast.

Rates and how to book
Rates start from £257 per night for a Standard Room on a bed and breakfast basis, rising to around £421 during peak season. For a five-star Algarve resort of this scale, that sits at the more accessible end of the luxury market.
The hotel is currently in a soft opening phase until the end of March, so if you are looking at booking in the coming weeks, it is worth contacting them directly to confirm availability and which facilities are fully operational. Full summer programming should be up and running from April.

If you are planning a trip to Portugal or looking at Algarve accommodation beyond the standard beach resorts, this one deserves a look.
