When we first published this edit it was all about park days, and the brief hasn’t changed, sunshine, ice cream runs, pub gardens, last-minute barbecues. What has changed is how we’ve built the guide: rather than linking individual dresses that sell out by August, each pick below points at the retailer’s full dress edit, so you’ll always land on what’s actually in stock. One standout style per shop, seven shops, zero dead ends.
1. The floral wrap midi, ASOS
The workhorse of every summer wardrobe: a wrap silhouette flatters everyone, and ASOS’s sheer range means it comes in every print, sleeve length and price point going. Start at the ASOS dresses edit and filter to midi, you’ll struggle to leave with just one.
2. The investment maxi, Selfridges
When the invitation says “garden party” and you want the dress people ask about, go designer. Selfridges’ dress hall runs from Ganni to Zimmermann, and one great maxi from here will outlive five fast-fashion summers.
3. The bodycon slip, PrettyLittleThing
For golden-hour drinks rather than park picnics: PLT’s summer dresses range is where the going-out end of the season lives, slips, bodycons and bold prints at pocket-money prices.
4. The vintage-feel tea dress, New Look
The high street’s most reliable middle ground. New Look’s summer dress edit does ditsy florals and button-through tea dresses that look triple the price, in a properly wide size range.
5. The crisp shirt dress, River Island
Sharper than a sundress, cooler than trousers: the shirt dress is your transition piece from office to beer garden. River Island’s dress range cuts them with proper structure, belt it, roll the sleeves, done.
6. The linen midi, M&S
Nobody does breathable fabrics like Marks & Spencer, and their linen-rich midis are the answer to a 30-degree commute. The M&S dress edit is also quietly excellent for petite and tall fits.

How to choose yours
Buy for the life you actually live: park days want cotton and pockets, evenings want a slip or bodycon, weddings want the Selfridges tab.
